TPWD LETTER SAMPLE SCRIPT

SAVE BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK

GENERAL PUBLIC LETTER SCRIPT

GENERAL

Attn: TPWD Commissioners and Executive Director

My Name is _____________.  I am writing to you out of concern for the future of the Big Bend Ranch State Park and the small Texas communities that rely on its environmental foundations for their economic growth and stability.

As a representative of the great state of Texas, I am requesting your advocacy to protect Big Bend Ranch State Park by opposing any physical border wall construction anywhere within the state park’s boundaries or neighboring communities.

Crowned by National Geographic as “One of the most Scenic drives in America”, FM 170, “The River Road”, runs the entire length of the southern stretch of the state park, weaving along with the iconic Rio Grande River.  A physical wall in the BBRSP or anywhere along FM 170,  would cause permanent damage to state public land, wildlife corridors, archaeological sites, and the Rio Grande river system .

The Big Bend economy depends on tourism and outdoor recreation based on the preservation of the BBRSP’s iconic beauty and ecological intactness. Industrial-scale infrastructure would permanently alter the landscape, displace local wildlife and people, and undermine livelihoods.

I urge TPWD commissioners to act and

  • uphold TPWD mission
  • follow and enforce due process
  • provide transparency
  • Include Big Bend Ranch State Park in the upcoming Commissioner’s agenda in May; allow for public comment

Protecting Big Bend is not a partisan issue — it’s about stewardship, conservation, and preserving Texas’ heritage for future generations.

Please respond with your response or statement on how you are working to protect Big Bend Ranch State Park.

STAKEHOLDER LETTER SCRIPT

Use this sample letter if your livelihood will be affected by a border wall construction in Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Attn: TPWD Commissioners and Executive Director

As a stakeholder in the Big Bend sector, I’m writing to say I respectfully oppose the construction of a physical border wall through Big Bend Ranch State Park, as currently advanced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Our position is not political; it is practical and conservation-minded.

The Big Bend area and the BBRSP are among the most remote and ecologically intact landscapes in North America. A physical wall would fragment wildlife habitat, disrupt natural water flow, alter the Rio Grande corridor, and permanently change the character of protected public lands. It would also threaten the tourism economy and small businesses that depend on preserving the wild, open experience visitors travel here to find.

Border security and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive. Effective and adaptable solutions exist without permanently scarring national and state parkland. In rugged Big Bend terrain, flexible technology is more practical and less destructive than a fixed industrial barrier.

We urge decision-makers to prioritize the most effective and least environmentally damaging solutions available. Big Bend is a national treasure. Once altered at scale, it cannot be restored.

Please respond with your response or statement on how you are working to protect Big Bend Ranch State Park.
